CHAPA, with the support of Alberta Health and Wellness (Canada), has developed a comprehensive Competency Profile for Alberta's regulated hearing aid practitioners. The Competency Profile is a detailed and specific description of the knowledge, skills, behaviours and critical judgments inherent in this profession.
Competency is the quality of being functionally proficient in performing the tasks and assuming the role of a specified position with the requisite knowledge, ability, capability, skills, judgment, attitudes and values. The Competency Profile is the foundational component for the Hearing Aid Practitioners' Continuing Competence Program. This Program is a system of assessing, maintaining and monitoring the ongoing competencies of the profession. It is a way of ensuring a high level of expertise, competence and appropriate ethics in performing the job.
The Alberta Health Professions Act (2000) requires that all regulated health professions have a responsible, accountable and formal means of assessing and reporting on the continuing competence of their members. All health professions are required to establish a Continuing Competence Program, to set up a Competence Committee, and report to Alberta Health and Wellness.
This CHAPA Competency Management System (CHAPAcms) was developed and implemented to assist hearing aid practitioners in Alberta to comply with requirements of the Continuing Competence Program. Using this website and their CHAPA member's userid, practitioners can complete their annual self assessments and learning plans online. Additional information and resources are provided so that this process can be done easily and effectively.
